When the rainy season stops, the high blue sky and the cold sun are signaling the end of Dran's persimmon season. On the hillside, the thin silver-gray tree trunks are almost bare of leaves, carrying the red fruit as if trying to absorb a little more of the essence of heaven and earth for more sweetness. No longer hard enough to keep crunchy, persimmons are now picked to make dark, honey-colored dried persimmons branded "Gieo..." (sowing).
Sowing trust, sowing prestige, sowing good, delicious and healthy things to consumers from local agricultural products - Overcoming 170 ideas to participate in the innovation startup competition in Lam Dong province, in 2021, the project "Gieo... agricultural products in the promised land" by young girl Le Thi Yen Vinh (1990) and the story of Dran dried persimmon excellently won the first prize of the contest.
As a homeland signature
The persimmon tree has been with Dran for more than 100 years, since the French discovered Da Lat, and then built roads and railways from Phan Rang across the Dran region to the forest. For many years, firmly rooted in the red hillsides and basalt soil color, suitable for the soil, the persimmon tree has a long life, requires little care, and gives many fruits with a special sweet and fragrant taste, surprising many diners. Dried persimmon is more popular because it is a strange temperate fruit, rich in sweetness, long-lasting, easy to store and transport, so it makes an impression and becomes a precious gift in every traveler's luggage when they leave Da Lat.
Born in the persimmon region of Dran, growing up, seeing each bunch of fruits light a fire in front of the porch, Nguyen Thi Yen Vinh's childhood was associated with each season of single-flowered trees bearing fruit. There was a time, she had witnessed the persimmon gardens being ignored, fruits were cheaply saled, because of the devaluation season, also because of the market flooded with unknown origin imported products. The confusion makes consumers bewildered, distrustful, afraid to choose, causing stagnant goods, and persimmon growers bear all the damage. Many farmers could not stand to cut persimmons and replace with other trees - That obsession prompted the young girl Yen Vinh to yearn to find a way for the persimmon tree.
Five years ago, Yen Vinh founded Da Nhim Agricultural Products Co., Ltd (Quang Lac residential group, Dran town, Don Duong) taking persimmons as the main source of raw materials and launched flexible dried persimmon products with the brand "Gieo...". “Gieo…” is produced 100% from local natural agricultural products, fully meeting the standards of quality, food hygiene and safety. Making a difference in its products, Yen Vinh has pioneered the application of modern technology in production, equipped with industrial dryers, using low-temperature drying technology of only 40oC - 60oC, equivalent to sunlight temperature; Therefore, the product can both retain the maximum nutritional content of fresh persimmons after processing and slowly dry to dark brown honey color. To preserve finished products after processing, Yen Vinh invests in 2 cold storages to meet the most optimal market demand, ensuring 100% natural and pure products, absolutely no additives or preservatives. Thanks to the soil, Dran climate creates persimmons with higher flavor and nutritional value than other places, helping "Gieo..." have more competitive advantages in the market. Dried persimmon "Gieo..." has been granted a certificate of food hygiene and safety, granted the right to use the trademark "Da Lat persimmon", certified 3 stars OCOP product in Lam Dong province.
Local agricultural products make up a prestigious brand
Overcoming many difficulties and challenges in terms of limited capital, the specialty market is full of fake goods, imitation goods, and goods of unknown origin; Dried persimmons "Gieo..." have sown in the hearts of consumers trust by prestige and quality. Especially for customers who have a sense of health protection, have a need to use foods of clear origin, nutritional supplements daily. Therefore, just being on the market for 4 years, products processed from "promising land" agricultural products with the brand name "Gieo" of Yen Vinh have been well received by consumers. In 2019, the enterprise's volume of dried persimmons sold 15 tons; In addition, other products of "Gieo..." are also popular with large consumption such as: 1 tonne of wind hanging persimmons, 2 tons of dried laba bananas, 6 tons of dried bananas, 7 tons of dried sweet potatoes. In 2020, despite the complicated epidemic, the unit still maintained production of 10 tons of agricultural products. Besides dried persimmons, the brand also diversified its products with: natural salted paper lemon, red artichoke jam, macadamia nuts, strawberry yeast, bananas, dried sweet potatoes... bringing in a total revenue of more than 5 billion VND.
As a result, the enterprise has stabilized the purchase price of agricultural products for farmers; increase the value of persimmons. If "Gieo..." has not been born, fresh persimmons in the season only cost from 3 to 4 thousand VND/kg; In the harvest season, farmers depend entirely on traders. Since "Gieo..." has been founded, businesses choose persimmons as the main raw material for production and development, the price of persimmons has stabilized from 7-8 thousand VND/kg or more, no more persimmon season price pressure. The enterprise has created jobs for 10 female employees, with a stable income of 4 million - 12 million/month. Since the past two years, many farmers have rest assured to restore and recreate the rose garden, bringing the persimmon tree back to its original position, affirming that Dran land has always been the "persimmon capital" of Lam Dong.
Continuously building brand and reputation, in the coming years, Yen Vinh will invest in upgrading processes and factories to meet ISO/HACCP standards; Buying a vacuum frying machine, developing a line of freeze-dried, crispy-dried products, expanding production, and diversifying products with a wide variety of agricultural products are Don Duong's and Lam Dong's strengths such as: Dried pineapples, dried strawberries, dried sweet potatoes, dried laba bananas... At the same time, applying product traceability, creating a close link between farmers - manufacturers - distributors - people consumption. Particularly, the flexible dried persimmon "Gieo..." still holds its position as the main product of the business, so that the persimmon tree is deeply rooted in the ground of Dran.
